How Wide and Thick Should a Leather Strap Be?

Width and weight follow the load and the hardware, not personal taste. A watch strap runs 3–4 oz and 16–24 mm; a guitar strap runs 6–8 oz and 2–2.5 inches at the shoulder; a heavy belt runs 8–10 oz and 1.25–1.5 inches. Match the weight to the load and the width to the pressure point — wider spreads weight, thicker resists stretch.

The two properties do different jobs. Thickness (measured in ounces, where 1 oz ≈ 1/64 inch or about 0.4 mm) resists stretch and gives the strap body. How Do You Attach Strap Hardware So It Never Pulls Through?

Anchor hardware with a stitched fold-back or a stitched-and-riveted loop, not a single rivet through one thickness. Rivets pull through because a lone rivet concentrates all the load on one hole in one layer; the fix is to distribute that load across a fold, a line of saddle stitching, and — where appropriate — a rivet as backup, not the sole anchor.
